Migraine Headaches
Migraine headaches can be a source of severe disability, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe throbbing, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to lights and noise. Migraines can last a few hours, or can last several days. Migraine headaches can be quite common. According to the National Headache Foundation, more than 37 million Americans suffer from migraines. Migraine Headaches Q & A
There are many factors which may trigger a migraine headache. Some of these include:
- Stress – According to the American Migraine Foundation, stress is a trigger for almost 70% of those who experience migraines.
- Hormonal changes, for example during menstruation.
- Changes in sleep patterns.
- Foods such as certain cheeses, alcohol, MSG.
- Bright lights, or loud noises.
There are four stages of a migraine episode:
- Stage 1: Prodrome usually occurs one or two days before a migraine. Some experiences may include mood changes, irritability, sleepiness, cravings for a certain food, or increased thirst.
- Stage 2: Aura – usually a few hours prior or during a headache, this phenomenon may include visual or auditory disturbances, hallucinations, feelings of pins and needles, and confusion.
- Stage 3: Headache phase – This includes pain on one or both sides of your head, throbbing, and can include light sensitivity and nausea/vomiting. Headaches can last from 4 to 72 hours, sometimes even longer.
- Stage 4: Post-drome – After a migraine headache you may feel exhausted, or confused. Some people may report feeling happy or elated.
It should be noted that it is possible to have a migraine without experiencing all of these symptoms.
Fortunately there are some things you can do to help lessen the frequency of migraines. These include keeping note of your personal triggers and trying to manage these triggers as they arise, for example trying to lower your stress levels. Other helpful things include regular exercise, and trying to maintain a regular sleep schedule.
There is no cure for migraine headaches, but there are some things the team at Ketaesthetics can do to help. Some of these include:
Botox injections which can help give migraine pain relief for months.
Trigger point injections can help relax the muscles in your back and neck which may play a role in your pain.
Nerve blocks for example occipital or sphenopalatine nerve blocks which can be an option for hard to treat migraines.
Cervical facet injections where anesthetic medication is injected into the neck area which can lead to pain relief.
