In simple terms, an intravenous (often abbreviated as “IV”) infusion is the introduction of a fluid (e.g. water or normal saline) into your veins via a cannula, typically in the arm or hand. Because the fluid is introduced directly into your vein, this is the most rapid method to introduce fluids and medications into the blood circulation.
